Empowering Young Voices through Journalism

At Dzikolanga, we are proud to support Chanco News, an independent online news platform based at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) in Zomba. Chanco News provides timely news updates on a wide range of topics, serving both the UNIMA community and the general public. Our partnership reflects our commitment to youth empowerment, digital innovation, and media development in Malawi.

Empowering Young Voices through Journalism

Beyond that, Chanco News runs a mentorship programme designed to empower students pursuing careers in media and communications. Through this initiative, students gain practical experience in:

Student Mentorship and Training

Since its launch in 2019, the programme has mentored 29 students, many of whom have gone on to build successful careers in media and communications. Students receive hands-on training in news gathering and writing, publishing and editing, social media content management, and website administration. Recruitment takes place annually as graduating students make space for a new cohort.

Our Legacy

Preserving a Legacy, Empowering the Future

Chanco News carries forward a legacy of student journalism at the University of Malawi that dates back to the 1970s. This legacy is not only historical but also deeply transformational. Through the process of reporting and publishing, students learn to speak up, think critically, take initiative, and engage meaningfully with society. With its growing social media following and an increasingly prominent role in shaping campus discourse, Chanco News continues to serve as a vital platform for youth empowerment and public engagement.

Bridging the Internship Gap

One of the programme’s most important contributions is its ability to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry experience. In Malawi, where internship opportunities are limited, many students graduate without ever gaining practical exposure to a newsroom environment.

Chanco News fills this gap by offering valuable, real-world experience that is not typically covered in formal classroom settings. Students are introduced to advanced digital publishing techniques that prepare them to meet the evolving needs of the modern job market.
